In september to november 2008, Emory University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu conducted a pupil assessment in SWASH+ project schools in Nyanza Province, Kenya to determine the impact of school WASH interventions on pupil knowledge, behaviors, health and absenteeism. The findings of the pupil final evaluation suggest that all intervention groups are making improvements in the regular availability of appropriate water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and that children’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviors are improving as well.

In 2005, CARE implemented the Safe Water System in 60 schools in rural Nyanza province, Kenya. An evaluation was conducted in 2006 to estimate benefits and determine whether the intervention was still in place (O’Reilly et al, 2007). The evaluation identified several potential threats to sustainability including: movement of teachers, availability of inputs and affordability of water treatment and soap.

14 schools were engaged in a set of interventions expanding and clarifying the roles and responsibilities of parents, pupils, and teachers for monitoring school WASH facilities. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were held with school stakeholders over the course of two terms to explore learning from the implementation process. Greater involvement of parents and students in monitoring school WASH programs was endorsed by both teachers and the parent community, and there were indications that the interventions could produce improvements in cleanliness of latrines and availability of supplies, as well as increased awareness of needed repairs.

In Nyanza Province, Kenya, a sustainability evaluation of 55 pilot primary schools 2.5 years after the implementation of the Safe Water System (SWS) intervention revealed that programme activities were not successfully sustained in any of the schools visited.
